The village of Chew Stoke is located at the northern end of Chew Valley Lake, approximately 9 miles south of Bristol, 11 miles north of Wells and 12 miles west of Bath. Listed in the Domesday Book as Chiwestoche the suggestion is it may have had some military connection at the time – the name “Stoke” comes from the old English stoc meaning a stockade. Chew Stoke is a well-served community with a pub, shop, restaurants, primary & secondary schools, a GP surgery and Village Hall. It is also home to a variety of thriving clubs and societies. There are two places of worship in the village: St Andrew’s Church and the Methodist Chapel. With a population of around 850 residents, Chew Stoke lies at the foot of the Mendip Hills, an area designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
